[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Laser Weirdness: Unexpected EOF from printer

laver@siodo.UCSD.EDU (Mick Laver) (07/12/90)

I have a laserwriter plus spooled off our 3b2/600 (SVR3.1) that's
been flaking out lately. We periodically get log file messages like the
following:

  alw: alw-7950 gloria "" start - Fri Jul 6 11:00:17 PDT 1990
  alw: alw-7950 d0-7950 - Fri Jul 6 11:00:18 PDT 1990
  pscomm: start - Fri Jul 6 11:00:19 1990
pscomm: unexpected EOF from printer (sync)!
  pscomm: end - Fri Jul 6 11:00:29 1990

We're using both the Transcript package and WordPerfect. The errors are
sporadic, but happen mostly with the WP files.

The REAL strange thing is that I have another LW Plus that I can swap
in and it works flawlessly ... as did the original printer until about a
month ago. Hardware problem, right? Well, I've taken it in to our local
"Authorized Apple repair center" twice and they can't find a thing
wrong. I have no reason to doubt the capabilities of the tech; he's as
mystified as I am.

I suspect there's something Apple's diagnostics aren't catching. Has
anyone else had a similar problem? If it makes any difference, the
faulty printer is an original laserwriter that's been upgraded to an LW
Plus (PS ver 42). The "good" printer has PS ver 39.2. Parity (none) and
speed (9600) are the same for both, and the "bad" printer works fine with
Appletalk.
