Yes, it happens if you use it in a dusty environment and don't clean the
drives.  It's probably a bit worse if you boot off of the OD (which
is NOT recommended.  it's too slow)...  There are some cleaning instructions
FTP'able from cs.orst.edu.

I've had my cube for about a year now, and I haven't had any problems with
my optical drive, even though the cube's been used in what I'd call fairly
dusty environments (college dorm rooms and so forth)...
