[comp.sys.mac.hardware] 030 accelerators cheap!

george@huntsai.UUCP (George Williams) (07/19/90)

I just got a new MacWarehouse catalog, and they're offering Marathon
030 upgrades for all non-030 Macs for $449, and they're even throwing
in SAM and SUM. This sounds like a pretty good deal to bring all of
our older machines (like my Mac-II) up to snuff for using virtual
memory under System 7.

Now, can we be SURE that these upgrades will really work under System 7?

Well it SOUNDS good, but...
   1. Apple will not say if System 7 VM will be supported by third
party accelerators. I know this for a fact, because I asked them.
   2. The Dove accelerator does not have a place for a math co-processor.

But for the price of an accelerator and the SUM and SAM software, its
not bad.

I think TSI's Mercury 030 line a good deal. You get the 16 MHz 68030
accelerator and a math chip socket for $595. This board allows other add
ons like a 32-bit Ram card, a High-Speed SCSI card, and a video card. Of
course at that price you don't get the math chip, just the slot for it.
