[comp.sys.mac.hardware] The IIci that wouldn't die

petrick@dms.UUCP (Jim Petrick) (07/21/90)

Our local Mac IIci just started some strange behavior. If you shutdown,
it completely shuts down, including power supply (all the lights go off),
then restarts itself about 1 second later. Anyone seen this type of behavior?

This is a IIci with the following other hardware:

	Syquest removable 45 Mb drive
	Microtek 24 bit scanner
	Kurta tablet
	Supermac 24 bit card w/accelerator

I doubt the above has anything to do with it, as unhooking it and turning off
all inits doesn't cure the problem.

Sounds like the power switch has been "locked on."
Take a look at page 104 in the Macintosh IIci Owner's
Guide where it states:

        1. With the system turned off, insert a paper clip
into the notch in the power switch.
        2. Press the power switch in and turn it 90 degrees
            clockwise.

The manual states that "This feature is provided primarily for specialized
applications, such as when the computer is used as a file server."

I'll bet . . . . .

Take a look at the little plastic screw under the power plug. If this is
screwed down it will lock the power on and give you the behaviour you describe.
If you don't like this, turn the screw to open the switch.
