[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Silverlining and passwords

carlo@eagle.cvs.rochester.edu (Carlo Tiana) (07/27/90)

Well, ok it's all my fault and I am a fool and all that, but here's my
problem. I bought a *great* 210Mb drive for my IIci from LaCie last
December (internal, my Mac's only drive). I love it: it's fast, quiet, and
ewell, quite spacious. As soon as I got it up and running (no problem at
all) I partitioned it into a ~100Mb and 2 ~50Mb partitions.. I also checked
out some of Silverlining's features, password protection being a neat one
among them. Ahem. I set up passwords for each partition and reset that
master disk password, each password being an obvious one (for me) and one
that I could definitely remember. Well, you know what's coming next. I
forgot all the passwords. Fortunately, the 100Mb and one of the 50Mb
partitions are not locked, i.e. I can read and write to them (until I lock
them once, that is! which I won't do!!!). The 2nd 50Mb partition is locked,
empty and I can't write to it. Super, huh!
Now if the password protection software is worth anything at all, I do not
expect to receive any replies from anyone. But if anyone can think of any
way to get those 50Mb back, please let me know!
What about backing the whole thing up and reformatting the disk? Does
anyone know if that will reset the passwords?
Desperate (and repentant),
Carlo.

Well Carlo, not to get your hopes up but there MIGHT just be a way :-)

You say you got your drive last December. If you have not updated your
silverlining software recently, you may be in luck! Earlier versions of
silverlining had a "minor" bug. Seems the password locking on partitions could
be overridden. They have recently (in the past few months) fixed this bug (the
tech support at LaCie asked me not to spread this around but where there is a
need AND an update :-)...

Apparently with some SCSI tools you can do a force mount of the partition
bypassing silverlinings password protection. A ways back someone even mentioned
on the net how easy it was, if that individual is still reading the net maybe
he might send you some info.

And now for a guess :-)!

It seems to me that you can actually CHANGE the driver on the hardisk without
having to reformat it. You might want to try reinstalling a new driver over the
old. If this works, you might be able to gain access by using the default
password as documented in your silverlining documentation.

I believe that the password fix was implemented in silverling v5.2

You can also contact LaCie's technical support. It is a 1-800 number and they
can be most helpful. I have talked to them several times and have gotten good
service (I have a Lacie drive and another Apple drive mounted in a LaCie case
running LaCie's silverlining)

Hope this helps!
