We've got an external hard disk where I work which has had episodes of being very noisy. For the last few days the drive has been incredibly quiet. I thought that maybe the fan had stopped working, so I touched the case. The case is quite warm, so the fan has probably died. How serious is this? I've noticed that some external drives don't have fans. Do they run very warm, or do they have special designs which allow for cooling w/o fans? What is the prognosis for this drive? It's an Ehman 45 with a Seagate mechanism if it makes any difference. Thanks, Keith Keith@ac.dal.ca

The dead fan problem leads to me to a similar question. Is it possible to replace the fan on an external hard drive. I have a 80mb PowerDrive (Seagate mechanism I think) which is incredibly noisy (which is probably why it was so cheap) I would like to yank the 747 engine out of it and put in a quieter fan. Does anyone know if this is possible. Thanks.
