Netters: I saw a bunch of people with hard disk problems where the drive would be work- ing intermittently. I think it is safe to say that when the disks are NOT able to mount or they are making odd sounds or no sounds of spinning you are best off NOT courting disaster. All the utilities in the world will not help you. The problem is most likely IN the drive itself. You can verify that the drive motor is getting power from the controller cirsuitry before you attempt to have it repaired, but if it does not SPIN it can't be used. You might be able to get the thing to work one more time to salvage the files by manually reposition ing the heads in the hope it will be able to spin up to speed. But in any case see to it that the first time it comes up you do a full, verified backup. Then you can find a place through Computer Shopper that will do the drive repair for you according to its size. Just some recommendations since we've had two bad drives handled in this way this summer. -Jeff- Jeff Brendle Computer Consultant Penn State - Berks Campus
