Your 40-meg disk may be one of the balky Quantum or Seagate mechanisms
that Apple has been having problems with.
A whole bunch of Quantum drives were manufactured with a lubricant which
tends to get gummy as time goes by. This can cause a couple of
different problems... the disk may not spin up at all, or (if it does)
the arm may have difficulty moving to the right track during "seek"
operations.
Some Seagate drives shipped by Apple have had similar problems.
Apple has announced a recall for the Quantum and Seagate drives affected
by the problems. I believe that they simply replace the defective
Seagate drives. The Quantum drives are "fixed" by the installation of a
new drive firmware PROM which increases the motor torque (to break loose
the sticky lubricant) and periodically exercises the arm with
full-length seeks (to keep it from gumming up again).
Here's what I suggest: open up your IIcx and check the disk. If it's a
Quantum or a Seagate, make a note of the serial number (probably on a
sticker on the PC board). Call your Apple dealer, and ask whether your
particular drive is covered by the official Apple recall on Quantum or
Seagate drives. If it is, you can take your machine in for service at
no cost.
Two suggestions:
1) Back up your drive NOW!
2) If your drive is a Quantum, and is eligible for the firmware PROM
exchange, make sure that your dealer's technician does the _whole_
swap-procedure. I believe that the tech is supposed to run an
exercise-and-test program overnight, after installing the new PROM...
this ungums the lubricant. If this step isn't done, then your drive
will behave oddly for the first few weeks you own it... it'll start
going into its exercise-the-arm process more frequently than you'd
like (it makes noise and slows down access to the disk's data).
Here's a little Control Panel device you can use to check your disk's
manufacturer and model code.
