HP DeskJet mail-out #1				August 3rd, 1990

G'Day

I was all keen a while back to start this thing rolling, but then my PhD
started to get busy (I am supposed to finish it by next February and have
not yet gotten any useful data [experimental physics]).

JetLink Express
+++++++++++++++
I was also waiting on a loan of a JetLink Express to test drive, form the
Australian Distributor of it, but it hasn't arrived, so i can't give a
review as yet.

Everyone I have heard from has said good things about this driver, however.
The only major drawback being not able to take advantage of cartridge
fonts.

Other Public Domain Driver
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I have heard from the author of a rival public domain HPDJ driver, called
DeskJet (DeskJet Demo in the demo version which is public domain, but not
very publicly available); Steve Cooper <73557.3556@CompuServe.COM> (those
of us on UseNet can email compuserve users by typing
nnnnn.nnnn@CompuServe.Com, where nnnnn.nnnn is the users compuserve
address).

Anyway, this program is supposed to be the dream program for HPDJ users. It
is supposed to be able to print at any enlargement or reduction; use
cartridge fonts if they are available; print in portrait or landscape; take
advantage of serial-to-parallel interfaces if they are there; and generally
do everything that you want. I have written to Steve to try to get him to
post it to Sumex's info-mac archive or comp.sys.mac, but he said that he
can't send binaries to the internet - anybody got any ideas of how we can
get around this problem? This group would surely like to try it out!

I was emailed an older version of this program which did not work, but I am
confident that Steve's current version is worth trying to get.

HyperCard problem
+++++++++++++++++
I would like to be able to print from the HPDJ 2.1 driver (the freeware
one), byt HyperCard 1.25 keeps thinking that it is connected to some sort
of ImageWriter and that the driver version number is too low: any hack way
around this?

Occasional white lines
++++++++++++++++++++++
Has anybody else come across this problem when using their DeskJets? In the
middle of perfectly good text: a white line, as if a jet has clogged up, or
the feeding mechanism is slightly out of whack.

I haven't had the problem but my sister, with the same driver that I use
(the Grappler LS), kept having this problem; also a friend using the
freeware driver has reported this? Any other experiences?

Re-filling cartridges, insoluble inks etc
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I would appreciate someone writing a short piece on these topics, since all
DJ and DeskWriter owners would be interested to hear.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Feel free to use this info as you like: any errors of fact or omissions, I
would like to hear from you.

Please bear with me and keep posting requests for information from the net
and from me.
