[comp.sys.mac.hardware] CMS 60/Mac II boot up problems

kehr@felix.UUCP (Shirley Kehr) (08/10/90)

" I am having trouble with my hard disk. About once a week it
"	disappears. I get the "?" MAC at startup. I then have to boot
"	with a floppy disk, go to the control Panel (with COMMAND-OPTION-
"	SHIFT) to reset the PRAM. And finally (get this) shut down, UNPLUG
"	my MAC and press the Power On button. This seems to discharge the
"	CMOS?! Then I can reboot and my hard disk is there.
"
"	I have an original MAC II with a CMS Pro 60-i.
"	PLEASE HELP!!!!

I could have written this same piece a couple years ago. Finally the
support person we were using at the time brought in a low-level formatter
that he said he had worked out with CMS personnel (in the back room) to
wipe the disk clean. He then reformatted it with the Apple formatter and
I (and my successors) had no more trouble out of the drive. It is
presumably the CMS formatting software.

There is probably no one in an official position at CMS that would
confirm or want to hear this story. We don't buy CMS anymore, so I
have no idea what is happening there anymore.
