[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Seagate ST225-N failure

wiseman@Tellabs.COM (Jeff Wiseman) (08/11/90)

I have heard over the past about several people running into the lubrication
problem on the older Quantum drives.

Has anyone ever run into something like this for a Seagate ST225-N like those
Apple installed in the external 20M drive cases?

I have a friend who's drive does always want to spin up. I might take a whole
minute before you can hear it start. Other times its fine and once it's
running, it always works fine.

Any ideas as to how it can be fixed (opened and relubed? I'm not afraid to do
this as the drive is over 2 years old, off warranty and the guy is running out
of space anyway and is considering a new one)? Are there any places on the
driver board that might have cold soldered joints that could be fixed with a
touch of an iron (soldering that is!)?
