[net.columbia] Money for nothing?

ramberg@axiom.UUCP (Mark Ramberg) (02/06/86)

I find it very odd that there is objection to helping the children
of the Challenger 7 financially. If a firefighter dies in a blaze, a fund
for his survivors is created almost immediately. The same is true if a
police officer falls in the line of duty. Those of us who are contributing
to the fund for the shuttle crew's children aren't trying to replace a
parent. We are trying ( in an inadequate way ) to honor the astronauts'
courage and sacrifice by helping their offspring through the financial
vagueries of life. Remember, astronauts ain't rich.

And don't they have a hard time getting life insurance?
(I read this somewhere a long time ago, so it may be regulated by gov't by now)
