[comp.sys.mac.hardware] HD scsi addr problem

giacobbe@pilot.njin.net (Jeff Giacobbe) (08/23/90)

I'm having a strange problem with a Gigamation DataCell 40 external
hard drive.

The drive is connected to the SCSI port of a Mac se. There is a small
dial on the front of the drive with numbers from 0 to 9. I'm assuming
this dial is used to select a unique SCSI address for the drive. It
came out of the box set at '4' and it worked fine for about a year.

Yesterday I turned on the Mac and all I got was the blinking disk icon
with the question mark...in other words, it had no clue there was a
hard disk connected to it.

I tried rebooting a half dozen times and finally booted with a floppy.
There was no hard disk icon on the desktop.

Eventually I decided to changed the little dial to '3', just for the
hell of it. Surprise surprise!! the hard drive booted! The question
mark disk icon flashed for a few seconds before it booted though.

What the heck happened?? Did the address at setting '4' suddenly
decide to die, or is there some problem with the SCSI port on the
Mac??

Any help would be appreciated.
