In comp.sys.mac.apps you write: >HELP ME! My hard disk does not boot, instead it makes a little clicking >noise when I turn on the machine. To backtrack, I have a macintosh SE >(older model) with an internal 45 MG hard drive and 2.5 RAM. I've been >using system 6.0.5. The internal mechanism on the hard drive is Seagate. Don't Panic. And what's the deal with "comp.sys.mac.macintrash", huh? Anyway, we had a 210 Meg Rodime that clicked, BUT DIDN'T SPIN. If your hard drive ISN'T SPINNING, (and it sounds like it, but use your ear right on the puppy to be sure) there is a cure. Only if you promise to never ever again post to every damn group (except rec.pets, why did you skip rec.pets?). Okay Mr. Panicky person, I owe a 6 pack of whatever to the person who helped me. If this works you get to pay him, hey. Contact me for details. And if the guy who helped me is reading this, contact me. All right all right! Calm down! I'll get to the point. Sticktion is what the guy called it. One of the other staff members saw a Physics experiment that showed the principle. Basically, the head sticks to the platter. What was recommend to me was: bang on the sucker. If that doesn't work, twist it. With power on. The object is to free the heads so that the drive can spin. Once it gets going, DON'T TURN IT OFF unless you must. DON'T TRUST THE DRIVE anymore. This worked on ours, I got a backup, but our maintenance contracted drive is being replaced because it has to go room to room so we can't leave it on all the time. Use common sense. Like not posting everywhere. Be careful!! AGAIN!!! Warning: If it is spinning, don't thump it. If it isn't spinning, this might be worth a try, but don't blame me if it doesn't work for you. No guarentees. SCSI. It is SCSI. Brian Aslakson --And use a spell checker or dictionary next time. -- aslakson@cs.umn.edu mac-admin@cs.umn.edu <-= Macintosh related
