[comp.sys.mac.hardware] which is better Deskwriter, DeskJet

I don't know about the GCC laserprinters, but I would strongly recommend
that you look at the DeskWriter (DW) rather than the DeskJet (DJ) or DJ
plus (DJ +).

I have a DJ and it takes about five minutes per page to print at 300dpi
resolution, unless you print in the built-in Courier at 2 pages per minute.

The DJ+ is slightly better, just using a serail connection, than the DJ,
but with a fast serial-to-parallel converter it can go as fast as the DW,
if you have the right driver (cost aoround $100 for MacPrint or JetLink
Express which are the best two; the serial-to-parallel cable is about
$150). Of course you don't have to get a commercial driver for your DJ or
DJ+, as there is a quite good one on the archives which is FREEWARE, (which
is what I use) but everyone who has one of the other drivers says its worth
it (except for the Grappler LS, don't know about their LQ or LX).

Anyway, unless you want PC compatibility in your printer, or someone gives
you a DJ or DJ+ I would strongly recommend getting the DW.

Last point: where do you get a price of $700 fro the DW? In Australia the
RRP is $A1800 ex tax (which is another 20%) [$A = $0.82 currently].
