So far, I have asked about the 210MB Quantum drives, which seem reasonable ($1075-$1200-$1500). However, every dealer I have talked to tells me the drives won't be available for another month. :-( I am also looking at the Micropolis (320MB, 16ms) or Imprimis (320MB, 16ms) from Hard Drives International (either for $1499) or MacLand (Imprimis for $1589). This is more than I wanted to spend, but 300MB is a better buy than 200MB. Conversly, the money I would save could be used to upgrade my 5MB RAM to 8 MB RAM, but considering I want gnu emacs, gcc, and X windows, I bet I need Disk Big Time! I can add memory later. The PC SCSI disks seem to be cheaper. Anyone have any feeling about this? Can I just purchase SilverLining and be all set? Or am I exploring uncharted territory? So far the 320MB drives are a favorite. (I drool over the 330MB 10.7ms Imprimis runner drives - $1900-$1959. Heavy sigh.... too rich for my account) If anyone has a better deal, please mail. I will keep people informed. (Note for people who will face this problem in the future, the phone and the latest issue of MacWorld, MacUser, etc. have been the biggest help. Everything else seems out of date.) -- Bruce G. Barnett barnett@crd.ge.com uunet!crdgw1!barnett

I noticed that in the September "Computer Shopper" on P.647 there is an ad for Fujitsu 2249 330Mb 18ms SCSI drives. I have been using a Fujitsu ESDI (2245E) and a Fujitsu 2243A (MFM drive used on my Mac with an OMTI SCSI/RLL Host adapter/controller). The 2243A is now starting to show pseudo-random errors during low formatting (I take this as a classic sign that an MFM drive has been pushed too far by use as RLL). This drive worked fine for 1 and a half years. I have been very pleased with the Fujitsu drives I have and am seriously considering purchasing a 2249S. I will probably find out what CSC (the place where I got the other two drives) will charge to bundle it in an external cabinet (it's full height 5.25") with two SCSI ports (so that I can cable more SCSI devices off of it). In case I wasn't clear, the ad from "Computer Shopper" is not CSC. CSC (Corporate System Center) can be phoned at (408)-737-7312 if anyone is interested in checking them out (this is not an ad, I just thought I'd provide a potential source of SCSI drives in response to this request). Anyone out there actually using a 2249S that can give us a summary of how well the drive has worked out? Based on what I've seen, I'll probably be getting a copy of "Silver Lining" to do my partitioning & formatting on whatever new drive I finally get. Incidently, someone in the back of "MacWeek" also generally advertises Fujitsu Drives for the Mac (just looked it up, it's a company called "Mac!Direct!" 1-800-621-8461 and Aug. 21st issue, they advertise: 357Mb 5.25" FH (presumably the 330Mb unformatted capacity) for $1549 as an external drive. 680Mb 5.25" FH for $2049 as an external drive. Both of these drives (according to ad) come with a 5 year factory warranty and have a 200,000 hour MTBF. No access times are given in the ad). Internal drive kits are cheaper (but you'd need a Mac-II full size case I believe). Thought all this might be interesting to folks looking into large drives & I'd be glad to see some real life experience postings for any of the Fujitsu SCSI drives. as an internal kit ($1549 -- ========================================================================== Bob DeBula | Internet: bobd@hpuxa.ircc.ohio-state.edu The Ohio State University | Disclaimer: These are my views, not the U's Davros sez: When my Daleks compute they use X-TER-MI-NALS!
