[comp.sys.mac.hardware] HELP unsetting Unit Attention on HP SCSI disk

peter@hari.VIEWlogic.com (Peter Colby) (09/10/90)

A while ago I managed to get my hands on an HP 380 MB SCSI hard disk to run
on my Mac Plus. This weekend I finally got around to swapping out my current
HD and putting the HP disk into the external box. I got it running fine with
La Cie's Silverlining (ver 5.25). The only problem is it won't boot because
it goes into the Unit Attention state on power up that the beige Mac Pluses
can't handle. I used the special Diagnostic menu in Silverlining to try to
set the Unit Attention flag (I was doing a Mode Select on Page 0x00 to set
byte 0x02 to 0x10). Needless to say this didn't work. I got an error 0x526
(pretty close, might have been 536 or something like that) and of course,
the flag didn't set.

The drive is an HP 97536SP Rev 8834

So.... I have 4 possiblilties

1) How do I get the specs for this drive? At the least I need the proper
description of how to set the Unit Attention flag. I would prefer the
complete description of the Mode Select, Mode Sense, and Format commands
so I can reformat for more space if I want. Obviously, the best of all
possible worlds would be the complete manual for this drive.

2) Failing the above, how do I convince my Apple Dealer to upgrade my ROMS
to the Platinum Plus Version that handles Unit Attention properly. I
heard some while ago on the net that Apple actually has a service code or
part number for such a ROM upgrade.

3) I could always get another external box for the HP and continue to boot
from my current drive. Not as secure an option (I mistrust my current
HD - it acted funny once, and it could do so again).

4) I could boot from a special floppy and switch launch to the HP (worst of
all possible worlds... especially considering all the inits I run)

I'd appreciate any help I could get.

THanks,
        Peter COlby

By the way, the drive seems to be a nice drive. The only problem is that it
shakes the desk whenever it seeks.
