[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Laserwriter NTX questions

I'm posting this for a friend without net access...

Hi troops.

First a quick (?) aside and then a couple of questions. On 8/30 I called
MacCenter (advertised in Sept. MacUser) to order SIMMs for my NTX. The
price was $55/Meg and they would ship COD ($4.95 UPS and $6 COD charge).
The woman I talked to said that because of Labor Day I would be getting
them 9/6. 9/10 and still no SIMMs. I call again and talk to a different
woman who takes my name and number, says she will check and call me right
back. 9/11, no SIMMs and no return call. I call again (thankfully they
have an 800 number) and the woman from the day before says, "I was supposed
to call you. Your package was returned." "Why?" "I don't know. Let me get
it and see." Several minutes pass. "It was undeliverable." "Is the address
correct?" "(My name)." "Yes." "(My street address at work)." "Yes."
"Louisville, Ohio." "No, Louisville, Colorado!" "Oh. Do you still want
these?" "Yes, but I've been waiting almost 2 weeks. When can you get them
here?" "I'll talk to my supervisor and see what we can do. I'll call you
right back." 9/12, no call. I call the Chip Merchant in San Diego. Their
price is $44/SIMM and only $7.80 for UPS Blue COD. 9/14 my memory arrives
from the Chip Merchant. I save $47 and lots of frustration. They get all of
my future memory business.

Now for the questions. I pulled the board out of the printer to put in the
memory. Bank 2 is empty so in they go. Put it back together, enable the
startup page and find that I have only 3 Meg. Move the 1 Megs to bank 1.
Still only 3 Megs. Move the 1 Megs to bank 0. Now I have 5 Megs. What am
I not seeing here that is keeping the printer from accessing all 6 Megs?

When I go to hook up a SCSI drive to the printer, what interleave should
I use when formatting?

Also, when I had the Motherboard out, I noticed two unused connectors.
J17 is a 96 (3 x 32) pin socket and J18 is a 32 (2 x 16) pin, 90 degree
header raised about an inch above the board. I would guess that one of
these is for the talked about "fonts in ROM" upgrades, but I'm not really
sure. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. Thanks.

Disclaimer: I have no association with either MacCenter or The Chip Merchant
except as a satisfied customer of the latter.
