[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Mac SE/30 flips out!! Film at 11!

consp21@bingvaxu.cc.binghamton.edu (Ken Hoover) (09/28/90)

I have an SE/30 here which appears to have completely lost it. Here
is the sequence, symptoms, and pertinent info:

System : Mac SE/30, 5megs RAM, 40mb HD, ImageWriter, Extended
keyboard, no other devices.

Yesterday, I tried to put the BigScreen INIT into the system folder
and reboot. Of course, the INIT didn't work, (machine hung, usual response
when a mac doesn't like bigScreen) and I rebooted from a known clean
System 6.0.3 master disk.

It now thinks that it has an EXTERNAL FLOPPY DISK. Every four or
five seconds in the finder, it pops up the little dialog that says
"this disk is unreadable, do you want to initialize it?" with the icon
for the EXTERNAL FLOPPY DISK in it. I did the following:

Checked the port on the back of the computer. Nothing blocking, in,
or near the floppy disk port (or the SCSI port) that would conduct
electricity. Some dust, but nothing in or against the connector.
Rebooted from a known clean system tools 6.0.3 disk
rebooted from a known clean system tools 6.0.4 disk
went into the HD SC setup program and "updated" the disk drivers
Used the installer and re-installed the system files
Disabled and/or removed all INITs (After Dark, GateKeeper Aid, Disinfectant)
Scanned with Disinfectant 2.0 and 2.1 - clean reports from both
  re-built the desktop
Removed system folder and booted from a known clean System 6.0.4
disk

None of these helped anything. The machine boots normally, but
performs all the time I'm in the finder. I don't even have to touch
anything and it puts up the dialog. Any ideas? Everyone here's
baffled.

  E-mail responses, please.

  THANKS!
