My father owns a Mac Portable, and has experienced some trouble lately. I know that not too many of these things have been sold, but I wanted to see if there is anyone out there with some experience with the Portable. To begin with, upon returning home about 3 months ago, I looked at his disk, and noticed NO SYSTEM FOLDER, but the machine still functioned normally. I searched and searched with Disktop and other fancy programs (Xtree Mac) and found no System Folder, no Finder, no System, nada, but the computer still booted fine and CDEV's still worked, although they were missing too. We couldnt find the system disks, so I couldnt reinstall the system. I figured that was the easiest thing to do. So, I came back here and left the portable in that sorry state. He called me the other day to inform me that the hard disk now would not "come up". He thinks it isnt even spinning. It will boot from floppy. Has anyone else experienced such strange problems with the system software on the portable or any mac? Does anyone have any comments about the Connors 40M internal HD? I dont think this is a hard failure, probably the boot blocks on the disk finally got fried, but he says it doesnt spin... which would mean a controller or motor failure. Any help, comments or experience is appreciated. If he sends it to me, I can come up with much more detailed information. Robert Pfile pfile@sprite.berkeley.edu
