[comp.sys.mac.hardware] 512 Power Supply Woes

mckenzie@amy7.stanford.edu (David McKenzie) (10/17/90)

I found out today that the power supply on my old Mac 512e is dead (I
thought that the intermittent video might have been due to a bad
cold solder joint, but I was wrong). The local dealer (ComputerCraft
in Palo Alto) wants $339 to replace it, which really isn't worth it.
I have two questions:

	1) Is there anywhere I can take/send the machine that will do
the work for substantially less money?

	2) Can I buy a replacement power supply and install it myself?
If so, from where and for how much $$$? (I'm in a physics lab, so I
have access to a fair array of tools, scopes, etc.)

Please E-mail replies unless you think everyone will be interested.

I just got a catalog (HyperCard Stack on disk) from MicroMat. If I
remember right, if you purchase their Analog Board Repair Kit and you
can't fix it yourself, they will repair it for only $25. The Welcome file
that is also on that disk says all the rest and I append it to this
message.

Total Systems

Eugene, OR 97401
800-874-2288 or 503-345-7395

also sells parts and repair kits, or will repair at rates much lower than
Apple's official service pricing.
