[comp.sys.mac.hardware] HD/Power supply problem?

davidp@skat.usc.edu (David Peterson) (10/24/90)

Hello, maybe some one here on the net can answer this:

Background:
I have a Mac SE/30 and an Everex Emac 200 external SCSI Drive, both
plugged into the same power strip. The mac has its own internal HD
that it boots from. The Emac drive is a full-height 5.25" Micropolis
1375 (140meg formatted).

Problem:
I want to leave them both switched 'on' and use the switch on the
power strip to turn everything on/off. When I turn things on this way,
the 'on' LED on the emac drive comes on for < second then the whole
thing goes back off (clear off, the fan's not even turning), meanwhile
the Mac is going through boot-up. About half way through boot (about
half my inits have loaded) the screen is cleared (the mac is starting
another 'phase' of its boot-up) and at the same time its cleared the
emac drive powers on (disk spins up, everything is fine), by the time
it finished spinning up the mac is done booting, I can use SCSI Probe,
Mount 'Em Fkey, etc. to mount the emac disk. -kind of strange.

If I leave the mac turned off and turn on the power to the emac drive
first then turn on the mac as soon as I can (<2 seconds), everything
comes up right (emac spins up while the mac is booting and it gets
mounted automatically).

---WHY?---

Its like the mac is sending out a SCSI signal as soon as its turned on
(actually I think its right after the on 'beep') that shuts the emac
drive off, then half way through boot sends out another signal to turn
it on (not exactly sure whats being laoded at that time).

Extraneous info:
The power supply inside the emac drive has two power connectors on it
(I think the case is made to handle 2 half-height drives; has 2 SCSI
ID switches as well) but using either one produces the same results as
above.

Also, if I put a terminator on the emac drive I get read/write errors
about half the time. I don't think its internally terminated, but I'm
not positive what an internal terminator looks like. No terminator, no
errors though. With or without a terminator though I get the same
results above at power-up. (I prefer it without the terminator :) )

Any info, ideas, suggestions, etc. would be welcome.

Thanks,
-dave.
