We have at least two users at work who use Ventel internal modems on their Mac II and also have Smart Label printers attached to the modem port. The problem comes when they have just finished using the printer to print labels and then need to use the internal modem to reach the outside world. Usually a dialog box with two icons will appear allowing them to choose either the internal modem or an external modem via the modem port, but once the label printer has set the port it uses to the modem port the dialog box doesn't appear when the communcations soft- ware is started. The only recourse then is to restart the Mac. Ventel's Customer Service said that that is the only fix, but that is a little hard for me to believe. There MUST be a byte in RAM, or a pointer in memory that the modem is twiddling to get it Mac to over- ride the choosen serial port. I have poured through all of the Mac manuals that I can get my hands on, but find nothing obvious. Any suggestions anyone?
