[comp.sys.mac.hardware] 1 gigabyte drives: summary

sherer@oucmail.cc.nd.edu (Michael Sherer) (10/29/90)

Thanks to all who responded. It appears there is more interest
than info on the 1 gig drives. Users of smaller Wren drives generally
report that they are pleased with them. I have a 300 meg external Wren
drive and it has been very solid, tho a bit on the loud side. The 1 gig
Wren is a full-height drive which will only fit into a II, IIx, or IIfx,
and that only with a replacement mounting bracket which should come with
drive kit (check with the vendor).
The prices on this drive have dropped to the tune of $1800 over the
last two months. It is widely available in the $2900-3100 range for an
internal model. Hard Drives International (800-733-DISK) sells an
external model for $2999, tho I have no experience with their drives.
Several netters sent favorable reports on Alliance Peripherals Systems
(APS) (800-233-7550), which sells the internal model for $2999, rating the
company high for service and support.
We have ordered the Wren internal drive from APS, in part because we
have a Mac II server, and we can power the drive off the Mac's power
supply which is covered under AppleCare, it's a little cheaper and we can
put the internal 150 that's in there someplace else.
