We currently have a situation in which we would like to place a MacIIci in an extremely quiet setting (and have it remain that way). We currently have a floppy drive unit with TOPS file sharing and a RAM disk to eliminate the noise of the hard disk, but this is not a good solution. Is anyone aware of a quite external hard disk that we might be able to place some distance from the unit? Any help is appreciated including directions to articals concerning disk noise. Thanks in advance, Steven Smith smith@nucleus.harvard.edu

We currently I have a LaCie Quantum based external (actually two of them). The quantum drive itself is VERY quiet compared to other drives and the LaCie box uses a fan running at half speed so the fan noise is very low. One other thing that you may consider is to maybe do something like this: Get a Quantum drive and a power supply from some hardware vender and mount them so that the drive and supply can use convection cooling thus eliminating a fan but making the "minimally enclosed" drive unit a little larger perhaps. I know that some venders even package drives like this. The other idea is to get ahold of the issue of MacWorld that they did the dirve sound level tests on a little ways back (I forget which issue it was but I think it was this year sometime). Hope this helps. -- Jeff Wiseman: ....uunet!tellab5!wiseman OR wiseman@TELLABS.COM
