[comp.sys.mac.hardware] IIci HD Problem : Weird!

18215MES@MSU.BITNET (11/01/90)

Setup: IIci, 8 meg ram, Quantom 80 meg hd, Apple 21" display,
old 21" display card (fully populated), system 6.0.5, After Dark,
Disinfectant Init (Just loaded & ran Claris Filemaker PRO...

Anyway, the hard disk refused to boot... NO WAY! So re-formatted it.
Very Little on it... (No problem with virii as far as Disin 2.3 is
concerned) - Attempted to move a Filemaker Pro File into another
folder & the Icon Poped Back! with no Error Message!. The shortly there
after the motor in the hard disk sounded like it was slowing down,
then it speeded back up ????

What's Next??

Any Ideas why the Hard disk would sound as if it was slowing down then speed ba
ck up? Bad power supply? (We have a surge suppresser on the line)

Many thanks for any help/ideas,

I think I tracked down the problem...

I got fed up with the thing acting up.. Pulled off the case cover,
and noticed a familiar aroma... -> the smell of shorting out wires!
I removed the hard disk, looked for telltale blckess on warious parts,
couldn't find anything, and as I replaced the scsi cable onto the
motherboard, the scsi connection going into the hard disk fell almost
all the way out! YIPES! Anyway, turns out a while back, someone
swapped drives, then swapped them back for some reason, and must have
failed to properly secure the scsi cable! WHEW! still works ok now!
Thought we'd have to send it to enginering for a while there!
