[comp.sys.mac.hardware] SCSI terminators

wiseman@tellab5.TELLABS.COM (Jeff Wiseman) (01/06/90)

I am chaining a series of LaCie external drivers together on my SCSI bus. I
have the need to occasionally remove one and take it someplace so this is
necessary. My problem is that I would like to leave some of my drives turned
off while they are on the bus.

The Lacie drives use the 25 pin (instead of 50) plugs for their SCSI interface.

I have two questions:

1) on the back of a SE, my manual states that pin 25 of the SCSI port is the
terminator power. Does the MAC provide this power?

2) Are there any 25 pin SCSI terminators available so that I can just disable
the builtin terminators on my drives?

Thanks for any info.

I have an external hard drive that I move from 1 system to another
fairly often. Sometimes I need it terminated, sometimes not. The
problem is that removing the terminators is a real hassle; I have to
take out a bunch of screws and dig through a bunch of electronics. It
would make things much simpler to have a thingy that I could simply
plug into the 2nd SCSI port of my drive to terminate it. Is such a
thing available? How much does it cost and *exactly* how do I go
about getting it?

Thanks,
Steve

When I was selling computers in a retail store, Apple made a SCSI terminator.
It looks like a SCSI cable with the cable part chopped off. It plugs into
the second SCSI port of the last device in your chain. As usual with Apple
cables,it was overpriced (around $30, as I recall). I assume they still
produce this device. Try your local ComputerLand or BusinessLand. For
some reason, I find that the Mac discount houses don't usually carry them.
