Folks, I posted the message a few days ago on comp.sys.mac, but since the newsgroup is going defunct, this seemed the next best place to send it. Actually I have two problems. The first has to do with our new HP PaintWriter which we currently have equipped with AppleTalk. It's great for my machine, but since we're running Novell on Ethernet, I need a driver so that the other Macs (and even the PC's, if we can figure it out), can hook up. Now we could hook all our Macs together on an AppleTalk LAN, but that would defeat the purpose of having EtherNet. In addition, since we have our Macs distributed over a large area, the measure would be self defeating. Novell doesn't have any queue generators that will recognize the printers, so I'm SOL. HELP!!! Second, we're about to install several "diskless" SE/30's. They're not really diskless, since one can use a floppy in them. The object is to boot them with the System Folder, and RAM drive software, and let the users go from there. What's really neat about it is that we don't waste extra hard disk space (and money on maintenance contracts, etc.), 'cause everything they need that isn't on the RAM drive is on the network. Sounds cool, but we need to virus-protect the RAM drives since the users have access to our file servers, they can accidentally spread viruses and the next time a Supervisor logs in we're dealing with a major problem - Supervisor has broad priveliges over all servers, so all of a sudden everything's infected. We've tried using GateKeeper (that's the ideal solution - no parameters to update for umpteen machines every time a new Virus comes out), however, we don't seem to be able to get the RAM disk software to cooperate. Anyone care to share sympathy/suggestions/advice? I'd appreciate it. Thanks a lot, Mike. ----- mike@pyrite.som.cwru.edu ..!{sun.uunet.dec.vax}!usenet.ins.cwru.edu!pyrite!mike
