[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Software controlled screen brightne

gillies@m.cs.uiuc.edu (10/31/90)

Any II-series machine can have the brightness changed (essentially) by
attenuating the values in the color table (the INIT "Dimmer" does
this). Can the LC be made to dim in this way? "Dimmer" is one of the
most foolproof dimmers I've ever seen.

Ahhhh, you must have a misadjusted monitor. If you open the special
service port on an applecolor monitor, you can readjust the brightness
and contrast so that "dim" is really "dim", i.e. unreadable. Don't
crank up the brightness or you may burn out your screen. Mine went
POP!, then blank for half an hour, and I was almost in tears -- but it
came back. So be careful! You need a microscopic pen-screwdriver to
do it. In other words, do this at your own risk (I did it to get more
performance out of MaxApplZoom).
