[comp.sys.mac.hardware] More Info on my HD problem

c60a-cz@danube.Berkeley.EDU (Donald Burr) (11/10/90)

Here's some more information regarding my problems with my DataFrame
XP40+40 hard drive.

Hooking up a DataFrame XP40+40 external hard drive (SCSI) to a Mac Classic,
1MB RAM, no hard drive, your basic Classic. No other SCSI devices on the
chain, and I've got a SCSI terminator on the other SCSI port on the drive.
The XP40+40 has a tape drive built in, as SCSI 1, and I can use it perfectly--
format, copy to/from tape, etc. no problem. But, when I run Manager 4.1E,
their drive format/partition/utility software, it displays the following
in a dialog box:

Under SCSI 0, an icon with a ? in it, and where there's suppowsed to be a disk
name or a disk type, there is a blank (null) field.
Under SCSI 1, an icon with a tape in it, and where there's supposed to be a disk
name or disk type, there's a string "DataStream" (this is OK, no probs here)
No other SCSI devices on chain

When I click on SCSI 0, to initialize it, it says:
(something to the effect of) "There is no media in "". Please insert media."
(and I thought hard disks were sealed in the case)

Now, whenever I turn on the unit, the Hard Drive spins up to full speed and
is ready to go, but , as little as 1 minute and as much as 1 hour of operation,
after that, the drive powers down. The rest of the electronics (cooling
fan, tape drive, etc.) are still on; the hard drive has conked out.

I'm running a minimal System 6.0.7, no INITs, no DA's except Chooser and
Control Panel, no CDEV's, etc. I've also tried under 6.0.3 and 6.0.5,
with no success.

The SuperMac drive is a 40 mb external SCSI hard drive, with built-in 40 MB
tapebackup unit. I'd say it's at least 1.5-2 years old. It's worked before,
on similar machines.

One more thing: it's recently been shipped from southern California.
The shipper was UPS next day air. Possible freight damage? I didn't notice
any dents or anything, but there doesn't have to be any dents. The package
looked rather beat-up; at first I thought it was just an old box they had
used, but maybe not...?
