[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Mac IIci 256K SIMMs - Bus errors!

gross@umiami.ir.miami.edu (Mondo) (11/12/90)

I've never heard of this problem before, so I hope someone else has...

Whenever they sell Mac IIci's here, they add in an extra meg along with
the 4 MB that is comes with. They use 256K SIMMs to get that extra meg.
Now the problem seems to be that whenever something tries to use that extra
meg, the Mac crashes with a bus error (ID=01, y'know, the one yer never
supposed to see :) ).

Now is there a certain speed that the 256K SIMMs need to be? They've been
using 80ns so far, and they do have a IIci with this configuration
up and running now, so they (and I) know it works. Could it just be bad SIMMs?
They do pass the boot-up test.

Oh one more thing...I've heard that if the Mac IIci doesn't recognize the
extra meg, but it knows it has more than 4MB, it'll try and re-use the
first meg of memory again. Is this true or am I just hearing things?

Thanks oodles.

(Person was having problems with 256K SIMMS in a Mac IIci)

According to my somewhat fuzzy memory, the SIMMS on a Mac IIci have
to be able to support burst mode. This is found on most all 1 MegaBit
chips out there, but I think it is lacking on most 256 KiloBit chips.

If I remember correctly, the 256 K SIMMS that will work in a IIci
(and I would assume a IIsi, now) actually have only 1 1 MegaBit chip
on them, as opposed to 8 256 KiloBit chips.

Then again, it is finals week, and with the state I am in, I could just
be halucinating.
