This is for all you Apple CDROM drive owners out there! My drive has been in the shop since October 23, 1990. According to the Service Manager at the local Apple dealer, Apple is recalling CDROM mechanisms due to a the high return rate. I am reporting this as I was told by the Service Manager. I have also read of many users having to remove fans and clean the lens of their CDROM Drive mechanisms frequently. My unit was new and had hardly been used at all. It did not have a fan in it. It played audio CDs just fine but was not able to mount data CDs. If you have been seeing the same sort of behavior from your unit, it is possible you have the same problem. You might want to get to the Apple dealer and get your CDROM mechanism swapped for the "new" kind. I will not get into opinions or judgements but I would like to add that the Sun CDROM drive I have at works functions properly. I have used the hell out of it, it has a fan in it and it works great! It also employs a Sony mechanism. (The Apple drive uses a Sony mechanism but not the same one.) I am just wondering why there is a difference between the performance of the Apple vs. the Sun CDROM drives. I had a similar problem with my CDSC a few weeks ago. It simply quit reading data disks, but played sound nicely. I cleaned the mechanism with a head cleaner, but it didn't resolve the situation. Then I started pulling inits out of the system folder. Removing DosMounter restored the use of my CDROM. What's even more interesting is that I later dropped DosMounter back into the system and things run fine. My theory on looking at system software was that the player read audio CDs fine. So it was probably some piece of software that was keeping it from working. At least it solved my problem! Jack Brindle
