[comp.sys.mac.hardware] BarCode readers info wanted

phil@and.cs.liv.ac.uk (Phil Jimmieson) (11/14/90)

I'm posting the following message for a friend who's looking for info. He
doesn't have access to Usenet news, so if you can help, mail to me here, and
I'll pass the replies on to him, and summarize here if there's enough interest.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Background.

We are looking into using barcode readers in our production control system. We
currently print out production control dockets on some high volume dot matrix
printers which we do not wish to change at this point. The problem we have
is that when we produce barcodes on the docket with our current printer the
quality is not of a high enough standard to be read by your average cheap
barcode wand.

Current.

We have managed to borrow a few assorted readers and have found that a CCD
(Charged Couple Device) reader is by far the most reliable method of reading
our inferior barcodes. The CCD reader we have on loan is a Barcode Scanplus.
(possibly manufactured by Barcode Industries of France, although markings on
the inside of the case suggest that may also be refered to as a reflexion plus?)

Problem.

The supplier that we borrowed the reader from, however, is unwilling to simply
supply us with the CCD reader. They will only sell us the reader in conjunction
with one of their wedge readers. This will require us to have a terminal with
every barcode station which we feel is uneccessary and expensive.

What we would like is information on equivalent or superior CCD readers (at a
competitive price) and the name of a supplier who will be wishing to sell us
some.

Martin.

Please reply to the following address. If you use a Bar Code reader on your
mac/pc (!)/what-have-you what sort is it?

Thanks
