[comp.sys.mac.hardware] inquiry on slide makers/LCD overhead projectors/big disks

kautz@allegra.att.com (Henry Kautz) (11/13/90)

I'm planning on getting the following devices for a IIfx, and
would greatly appreciate info from anyone who has used one (or a
competing brand):

(1) Matrix Procolor (or maybe Slidewriter) Film Recorder (for making 35mm slides)
A big problem here is the lack of PostScript. One dealer
suggested a standalone RIP (Postscript interpreter), but that
was way too expensive --- $15,000. 3rd party software
interpreters (eg Freedom of the Press) seem rather klugy to
use. Are any <$10,000 Postscript slide makers coming out?
Now that you can get a Postscript color printer for $7,000 it
	seems not unreasonable.

(2) Proxima Data Display (LCD panel that is used with an overhead
projector). I`m looking for a COLOR high quality unit. Any
experience here??? Or even pointers to reviews???

(3) Fujitsu hard disks from Mac!Direct!: 680 MB External for <$2000,
with a 5 year factory warranty. Lots of folks sell the 600 MB
Seagate Wrens at that price, but that has only a 1
year warranty. For that matter: is there a difference between
a "Wren" and a "MacWren"? I suspect that there is something
	different about the SCSI controller.

Thanks in advance! (Please email replies.)

We bought a Fujitsu 68-MB drive from MacDirect. They were easy to deal with,
and really seemed eager to help. It formats out to about 650MB with
Silverlining, and is a bit noiser than the Imprimis Wren V 600MB and
HP650 MB drives that we own (we have _very_ large online medical
databases, in case you're wondering what we're doing with all this disk
space.) SCSI evaluator shows it to have about the same performance as the
WREN V drive, and somewhat lower perfomance than the HP drive (my personal
favorite).

We bought it because of the 5 year warranty, which is the same reason
we bought the HP drive (from LaCie).
