Does anyone have experiecnce with SE accerator cards? I'm considering purchasing one, but don't know too much about the differences between the available cards. Will most of the 030 cards run System 7.0? Anyone have a Radius accelerator? ^^^^^ The above statement expresses the views of the individual and does not necessarily reflect the views or concerns of this place of origin. -- JEFF BECKER via cmhGate - Net 226 fido<=>uucp gateway Col, OH UUCP: ...!osu-cis!n8emr!cmhgate!124!1009!JEFF.BECKER INET: JEFF.BECKER@f1009.n124.z1.FIDONET.ORG

(I couldn't resist... :-) The Radius Accelerator uses the 68020. (It was designed before the 68030 was available.) However, this does NOT mean that it won't run System 7.0. You ONLY need an '030 (or '020 w/PMMU) if you intend to use virtual memory, which is but ONE of the features of System 7.0. I believe that many people are under the impression that System 7.0 won't work if they don't have memory management, and that is simply not true. Apple has even said that System 7.0 will run on a plain old SE, so an accelerated '020 SE should also run it, as long as you have enough physical memory installed (2mb minimum?). Note that I am NOT claiming that the Radius Accelerator is System 7.0 compatible (nor am I saying it isn't!!). I haven't tested it yet... -- ----- Steve Lemke, Engineering Quality Assurance, Radius Inc., San Jose ----- ----- Reply to: lemke@radius.com (Note: NEW domain-style address!!) -----

A real comparison of the different cards could well take 20 pages, without the typical magazine bullcrap. I compared all the ones that the magazines suck up to, then bought the Mac RailGun 030-25. I see functional performance virtually identical to my IIfx. It's my understanding that as of today, NONE of the pre II mac's will EVER be able to run System 7.0. I've been told the problem is the roms & the restricted bit bus to the roms/rom environ. That MAy be wrong, and that MAY change, but apple has been strangly silent. Not even a good rumour, now that's a bad sign. I guess the moral is, unless a MFG is willing to gaurantee system 7 compatability, just never mind... al -- Al. Apple and Apple representatives have repeatedly stated that every Mac from the Plus on up will be able to run System 7 as long as it's equipped with at least 2 Megs of memory. The only feature that will not be available on non-PMMU/030 Macs is virtual memory. Right now, I'm running 7.0B1 on a plain SE w/4 Megs and using personal appleshare to publish a CD-ROM drive on the network. It runs quite nicely, even with people accessing the CD-ROM. --- Matt Kingman - Macintosh Software Engineer Pacer Software Inc. - Westboro, MA 01581 Disclaimer: I speak only for myself.....

It's my understanding that as of today, >NONE of the pre II mac's will EVER be able to run System 7.0. This is a dangerous untruth. The only feature of System 7 that pre-II Macs will not be able to run is virtual memory. It's a relatively minor innovation in System 7 as far as the average user is concerned. System 7 offers tons of impressive new functionality: interapplication communication (AppleEvents, Edition Manager, and eventually AppleScript), TrueType font technology, a rewritten Finder with Help Manager, asynchronous sound, true color reproduction, DA/app menu launching, font/DA/cdev/rdev installation by simple dragging, a sturdier multitasking environment, and much, much more.
