[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Backups, tape or disk?

doug@ridley.coyote.trw.com (Doug Rudoff) (11/20/90)

I am looking for advice on a relatively low cost backup system for my Mac.
I am considering either 45MB removable cartridge or tape, leaning towards
the removable cartridge. I would like to keep the cost of the drive itself
itself at or below $600.

Can anyone offer some input as to the relative merits and reliability of
removable cartriges over tape? How about any comparative studies of
various Winchester type drives (MacWorld?). Ones I might consider are:

CMS $839 a bit pricy - worth the cost?
  Cutting Edge $679 @ MacWarehouse
  Ehman $649
  Mac'sPlace $623 they assemble SyQuest + case ???
  Microtech $589 @ MacZone
Jasmine $599 I know, but I have a Jasmine HD80 with no problems
in 5 years, and I hear they are rebuilding

I have the MacWorld November 90 issue with a study of tape units.
Are the lower priced Teac 150 drives (MacProducts, Relax, Ruby)
worth the additional cost over the 45R possibilities? How about
the Teac 60 products?

If anyone has any information, suggestions, or recommendations,
I would appreciate some E-Mail. Better to use one of the paths
below, as I am not sure about the reply path to this posting.

Sorry if this is old stuff, I have been gone from the net for
over a year.
