[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Mac II's on thier side?

soudan@iitmax.IIT.EDU (Bassel Soudan) (12/05/90)

I just bought a MacIIcx and I have been having problems with the
internal hard disk. If I stand the machine on its side (just like Apple says
you can) the hard disk will crash within 7-8 reboots. It will crash to the
point where I can't mount it any more.

The question is: Is this a problem with my hard disk, or are all of
these people in all the commercials and photos in all the magazines that
have Mac II's on thier sides looking for a dead disk? The general consences
here is that no matter what the manual says, you should not put a Mac II with
an internal hard disk on its side. Is that true.

BTW the hard disk I have is a Quantom (sp?) I am not sure if this makes
any difference.

I cannot say for sure if there is a problem with your Quantum drive, but
I do know that unlike previous Mac II's, the cx and ci were built to be
positioned either vertically or horizonally. I think you may solve your
drives problem by positioning the cx the way you want it and then
reformatting the drive. (Be sure to backup the drive prior to
reformatting it, tho.)

If that doesn't help, then I would go back to the dealer and have them
take a look at it for you.

The cx and ci accommodated vertical mounting through appropriate
placement of the air vents. Unless one uses a properly designed stand, a
Mac II on its side may leave those air vents blocked. I've used several
CDC drives mounted horizontally and vertically and never had reason to
reformat simply to support reorientation.
