[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Practical Peripherals PM9600SA

As one of the "bleeding edge" buyers of this modem, I thought I might save
some Mac purchasers some bucks sending the modem back for the "Mac Upgrade".

Found out what it was (after I spent the bucks to ship it back with insurance).
Some of the early models didn't have a wire running from pin 7 of the DB-25
to the modem ground. Problems only showed up on Macs. You can call and find
out if your serial number is effected and put it in yourself (or open the case
and take a look). Sheesh, I wish I'd known.

Also, PPI is shipping new ROM upgrades (free if you ask) about one a week!
Some folks are having problems connecting with non-v.42 or non-MNP modems.
I haven't had any problems except with one recent connection to a Gandalf
2400 on an autobauding port. (My ROM is 1.16 and the latest is 1.18).
Maybe they'll get it sorted out by 1.2?

Finally, a v.32bis upgrade is supposedly in the works with a March ship date.

Despite all this, I like this modem. And considering the price compared to
a Hayes Ultra or USR v.32, I feel like it was a good deal. It's definitely
not a Hayes, but why pay for quality you don't need at home?

Cheers,
