[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Black is "too bright" on my IIcx/Sony 1302

Oh Great Netguru's: =)

I have a Mac IIcx with one of Apple's "second revision" (e.g., 99% surface
mount components) eight-bit color cards. I also have a Sony CPD-1302 multi-
sync monitor, which is the same monitor Apple re-packages as its 13"
AppleColor monitor.

Now here's the problem: After Dark is really After Dusk on this machine.
In other words, the "blacks" (all zeros in the Palette manager) aren't really
what I consider "black." Any supposedly-black background has a blueish tint
to it, and the difference between the border around the edge of the screen
and the actually addressable part of the display is readily apparent.

There are no "picture" controls on the back of the monitor; just adjustments
for size and positioning. On the side of the monitor are two controls, one
is "Picture" the other is "Bright." Currently, I have "Bright" adjusted as
low as it will go, and "Picture" about 3/4 of the way to the top. The "Bright"
control has a center detent, which I'm not even CLOSE to using. If I put it
in the center, whites become very white, and the background surrounding the
screen becomes gray, as does this text.

SO... are there any internal adjustments in this monitor for brightness?
How about on the 8-bit card?  I looked at the card but didn't see anything;
I haven't yet taken apart my monitor -- but will if I know there's some
adjustment in there I can twiddle with!

I'm not unhappy with the current setup - I love the current display; all the
other colors appear to be "in order" provided I have the controls set as
mentioned above. It would just be nice that when After Dark kicked in my
Mac didn't act like a night light for the whole entire room. =) Everything
gets this really soft blue tint to it, whereas I'd much prefer REAL black.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. You can post if suspect others have
this same problem, or you can reply direct via mail. I will summarize if
people are interested.
