[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Mac on ethernet?

roy@alanine.phri.nyu.edu (Roy Smith) (01/13/91)

We're thinking about setting up a largish Mac system and want to put
it on ethernet instead of LocalTalk. What's the best way to do that? Is
there any significant difference between the ethernet boards from Apple or
Kinetics or any other vendor? Things we want to be able to do are print to
LocalTalk LaserWriters and mount volumes from LocalTalk AppleShare file
servers (on the other side of a FastPath), run various IP-based services
(telnet, ftp, etc) to Unix boxes on our ethernet and elsewhere on the
Internet, and possibly connect to an AUFS server on our ethernet. Are there
any surprises in store that I should know about?
