[comp.sys.mac.hardware] need help: Mac IIcx crashes with Emacs tape backup unit

Help!
We have a macintosh AppleShare Network. We had been running it with
an SE as a file server, running system 6.0.2, with three external
SCSI units: an 80 Meg apple HD, a 150 meg Emacs HD, and a 150 meg
Emacs tape backup unit. We upgraded to a Mac IIcx for a file server,
and at first ran it from the system 6.0.2 system folder (on the 80 meg).
System, network ran fine. Then we upgraded to system 6.0.5. Disaster.
We installed the appropriate system, appleshare, groups, users, etc. on
an internal 40 meg HD in the IIcx. Tried to start it up. BOOM. Either
nothing would happen, or the system would start to run and crash, usually
with the screen image of the AppleShare software starting flashing on and off
rapidly. After some experimentation, we discovered that if we had the tape
drive CLOSEST in the SCSI chain to the Mac IIcx, the system booted sometimes;
if we removed the tape drive from the SCSI chain, the system booted normally.
Everytime. Note that we checked: SCSI numbers on all units were different.
What gives? Any ideas? Emacs has so far been less than helpful. Any
suggestions as to what is going on, what to do? Thanks in advance...
