[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Help, My Mac II is whining.

Greetings,
I have a small, but annoying problem with my Mac.
I have a Mac II, and since I bought it (about 3 yrs. ago), it has produced
what I would characterize as a high pitched sound or whine. The interesting
thing about the noise, is that the characteristic of the sound changes with
the state of the machine. At first it did not bother me, but now I have become
quite good at telling what someone is doing on my machine, just by the sound it
makes. For example, the sound my Mac makes during clicking and dragging, idling,
screen updates, and computation are all quite different.

I have consulted with many people and no one could explain this "phenomenon".
Although, someone did suggest that the power supply might be the culprit, based
on the fact that the sound seems to originate from that area of the Mac. But,
before I shell out $230.00 for replacement of the power supply, I would like to
know if anyone has observed or heard of such behavior, what might cause it, and
if it is possible to fix the problem.

Please e-mail responses.

Thanks
John
