Is it possible to buy a kit for an internal hard drive so that at can be used as an external drive? Or is it possible to do this task without the aid of a kit? It seems that an external drive is just an internal drive in a box with a power supply, an led (red light), and two scsi connectors. And maybe a scsi ID selector switch. I had a dead drive in a good box (two, actually). I bought an "internal" drive and installed it in the box. The connections seem to be standard. This saves about $100 over buying another external drive. Just make sure you order the right size (probably 3 1/2"). You can buy the boxes for about $100 from the service centers of some dealers, and I'm sure at other places, too. Hard Disks International sells such a "kit", although they do not call it a kit. I think they call it an enclosure. The one I priced was about $100. Several other hard disk packagers also sell such "kits" as replacement parts. I bought one from a well-known and well-regarded packager (which will remain nameless as the salesman said it was a little irregular to sell it to me). It cost twice as much but has a smaller footprint and a quieter fan than the HDI enclosure. Transfering an internal drive to the enclosure I bought was easy; your mileage may vary. John
