[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Macintosh IIci serial ports - What's the difference?

Hi!

What, if any, are the major differences between the Mac IIci's two
serial ports, modem and printer? I'm aware that it's supposedly
running RS-422 standard for both which is ok. The reason I ask is that
we've got a network environment using the modem port and wish to use
the printer port to talk to another network. The software in use (I
believe it's VersaTerm Pro or VersaTerm 100) doesn't care which port
is used, as long as it knows beforehand (plus, we're doing a similar
arrangement on an SE, and it works fine). Yes, I know Apple says
"The printer port should be used for output-only connections to
devices such as printers, or at low baud rates (300 baud or less)."
But they're both run by the same chip (the SCC) and, like I said, it
works on an SE (yeah, I know, no reason for it to work likewise on a
IIci, but one can hope...).

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
