[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Total Systems 030 board for +?

rrw@naucse.cse.nau.edu (Robert Wier) (01/29/91)

Please forgive if this has been hashed over extensively.
Its hard to find time to read all the newgroups I'd like...

Has anyone tried the Total Systems 030 add in boards for the
Plus? They are priced at $500 (see ad on page 23 of Macweek
01.22.91). Although expensive in terms of the current Classic
et all, we have a LOT of Plus machines... If they could be
upgraded to the performance level of, say, an SE 30 (without
the superdrive, of course), for $500 apiece, we might go for it.

I'll check back here, or E-Mail. I'll summarize if responses
 warrant.

 THANKS!

I talked to someone at MacCenter on Friday about that board. It is not
a Gemini but another board which is crippled, like the Dove Marathon.
It has no provision for on-board memory. It will give only a slight
speed increase, 10% to 15%. The real thing, the Gemini, costs over
twice as much. Try the Novy 030 board. It has everything you might
want at a university price of $590. Note that MacProducts Railgun
may look attractive. They bought their technology from Novy, and
they offer their board at $500. However, Their board requires a
$145 power supply and fan. The Novy board is made with newer technology.
It uses cool running chips which the MacPlus power supply can
handle. They do recommend a fan.

We are in the process of buying two of these Novy units. We expect to
buy two more, if the work out. By the way. They offer 30 days money
back guarantee, no questions asked. Their unit is solder-in. You can
send them your logic board or have it done locally. Their guarantee
is good for a year, even if you have local installation.

I have not seen the board, but I have heard from a satisfied netter.
