[comp.sys.mac.hardware] CMS PD-600 Hard Disk and the Mac IIfx; desparately seeking advice

nevai@mps.ohio-state.edu (Paul Nevai) (01/26/91)

HELP!!! HELP!!! HELP!!! HELP!!! HELP!!! HELP!!! HELP!!! HELP!!! HELP!!!

I have a CMS PD-600 Hard Disk (a Wren V: 94181-702) and a (new) Mac IIfx.

Problem: when I removed the (internal) terminators from the Hard Disk (as I
am supposed to) it stops working, i.e. doesn't not spin up when I turn on
the power. As such I can't use it with the IIfx since that requires the new
(black) terminator. The drive works flawlessly with the normal internal
terminators (on a Mac II, say).

Can anyone advise me what to do?

Please respond by email!!! Thanks a million and more! Paul

First, make sure you have removed the right chips-- there are other resistor
packs on board. The two you want are PROBABLY below and slightly offset
left of the power connector for one, and the other far to the left, on the
other side of the SCSI cable-- I say probably because that's the way it is on
my Wren IV. Call Seagate's technical support BBS, and check out the
file sections-- you want the specs on the ST4702N. (number is 408-438-8771)
The other thing you want to do is make sure the motor start enable pin is
NOT jumpered. On my Wren IV that is the two vertically set pins just to the
left of the SCSI ID pins, on the same jumper block.

On the half-dozen or so IIfx boxes I've put Wren V 94181-702's in, I left the
internal termination SIPs in place, along with the IIfx SCSI "filter" that
came in the fx. Was this wrong? They all work fine.

No-- this is correct for an internal drive. I thought the original poster
was having problems with an external drive (where the Official Apple Word
According To Some Tech Note is to remove the internals and put the black
one on).

BTW, where did you get a full-height mounting bracket for the IIfx? I'd
love to move my Wren IV inside my II, but I can't seem to find anyone who
has the brackets.

Oops. I guess I wasn't reading as closely as I should have.

We order the brackets when we order the drives, but I'm sure you can get
them seperately. We get them from MacTel in Austin, Texas. Their phone
number is (800) 950-8411. You can see their ad in any MacWeek. I think
they also run it in MacWorld and MacUser.

MacTel has also been good about selling us empty enclosures for drives
we've removed from old Macs to install 600 meg drives. I have no
connection with them other than as a satisfied customer.
