SUMMARY: I passed on the Vista 60 drive (Seagate); I bought Fujitsu 90

A few weeks ago, I posted a question about the Vista drive from Relax
Technology. It is an external 60 Meg SCSI drive for an unbelievable
price of $299 brand new. Thanks to all who responded.

No one responding had any problems with Relax as a vendor. However, the
Seagate drive drew lots of complaints. One guy did say he's been using a
Seagate for five years with no problems, but many more said to steer
clear. I'm wary of blanket generalizations, but one guy who should know
gave the figure of 25% of Seagates going bad in the first year.

While debating this, another MacWeek advertiser, MacDirect, dropped
the price on their 90 Meg external Fujitsu drive to $469. The best
part is that this drive comes with a THREE YEAR guarantee!!

The combination of reasonable price and 3-year guarantee of the Fujitsu, and
alleged reliability problems with the Vista, prompted me to go for the Fuji.

MacDirect (800-621-8461) has only been doing mail order for six months,
but I'm pretty confident when using credit card, since I can always
refuse to pay the bill if I don't get good merchandise.

No need in this case, though...I received it yesterday and it's working great;
came preformatted and included disk partition software. There is a
push-button SCSI ID selector on the back, and it was surprisingly quiet
(at least compared to my DataFrame 20!). Total cost was $479 with shipping,
including the software and SCSI cable. Took about six days to arrive.

Hope this info helps those who are thinking of upgrading disk capacity.
