This sounds a lot like a problem I (and several thousand other Mac owners) had a year or two back. My 40Meg HD also wouldn't start up every once in a while, and I too resorted to unbolting it and jiggling it to get it to work. Fortunately, Apple decided to replace for free any drives suffering from this "stiction" problem. Talk to an Apple dealer and see whether the serial number of your drive falls in the range which Apple was replacing. It may be that the free replacement offer is still available -Ralph
