[comp.sys.mac.hardware] internal hard disk

ether@tzero.usa (David Etherington) (02/05/91)

I have a Maxtor 200 MB hard disk originally shipped
for use with a Sun that I want to use as an internal
HD for my IIfx. After much futzing around, I got it
formatted, and the system to boot from it as an external
with an external power supply.

I then moved on to try and mount it internally, only
to find that the system won't recognize it. I can plug
it into the internal SCSI connector and external pwr
supply, and everything is fine, but if I use the internal
pwr, it spins up and the heads come in, but it isn't
recognized.

The VOM says that the external pwr supply is giving
12.5, 0, 0, 5.2 v on the 4 leads, while the internal
one is 12, .25, .25, 5, with reference to the chasis
ground. Is this the problem, or is something more subtle
going on? Is there a fix?

Any help appreciated, especially responses by email
to ether@research.att.com.

thanks,

...David Etherington.
