Hi there,
I am considering purchasing a (new) modem for my Macintosh IIcx
(5 MB RAM, 40 MB HD). Internal is preferred, as I have plenty of slots left
(all I have used are for the video --- Apple RGB High-Definition Colour), and
I would rather not waste the desk space (in keeping with the philosophy of
the more compact IIcx box and bearing in mind the size of my little home ;-)
I intend to use the modem (>= 2400 baud preferred, I guess) to
access the Department's mainframe, as well as do some file-grabbing from
BBS's and transferring stuff I will get via ftp-ing anonymously on the
mainframe (a Unix box), etc.
Any suggestions re hardware (in particluar), communication software
to go with it (preferrably free-/share-/smile-ware)? Please post, or e-mail,
I don't really care too much which!
John
PS I have never used a modem in my life. This may also be a factor.
Another factor to consider is that the modem must be compatible
with the Australian telecom standards (about which I know nothing).
I will not be dialling internationally with the modem.
International traffic will be handled through the mainframe.
PSS I am a post-graduate student, hence cost IS a factor!
